Tim Cahill Should Be Used Better byvan Marwijk, claims Slater
Australian national team coachBert van Marwijk has come under criticism for not utilising Tim Cahill to the best of abilities at the World Cup 2018. The former Everton midfielder is one of the experienced campaigners in the Australian national team setup. After an indifferent qualification campaign, Australia were able to reach the finals but the team were not expected to make an impact at the World Cup. The team had a disastrous start to the competition after only managing a draw with Denmark. The game was seen as a winnable entity for Australia, but they had to settle for just a point due to a lack of offensive impact.
Robbie Slater criticised the coach for not utilisingCahill, who has been an icon for Australian football for the last decade or more. The 37-year-old may be coming to the end of his career, but he is still capable of providing a significant threat going forward. It is not a surprise thatCahill has come up with goals in major tournaments in the past. Since it would be his final tournament with Australia, there have been a lot of calls for the Dutch coach to includeCahill. It is expected that he has no plans of includingCahill even after the draw with Denmark, as the 37-year-old is only with the squad to provide experience.
“He simply doesn’t understand the belief we have in Cahill to deliver in the biggest moments for our national team. He wasn’t there when Cahill scored two goals against Syria as a 37-year-old in a sudden-death qualifier that kept us on the road to Russia. He wasn’t there when Cahill scored two goals against Japan at Kaiserslautern in 2006.And he won’t be there in two months time when we look back on this campaign and wonder what might have been,” said Cahill.
